Singapore - Mr Jeffrey Ho Kiat was appointed the new Director of the DesignSingapore Council, the national agency for the promotion and development of Singapore design, on 1 December 2009. He took over from the previous Director, Dr Milton Tan, who will resume his Associate Professorship in the Department of Architecture at the National University of Singapore from 1 January 2010.

About Mr Ho

Mr Jeffrey Ho was founding Director of the School of Design at Singapore Polytechnic. Prior to setting up the School of Design, Mr Ho co-founded the IDEA (Innovation Design and Enterprise in Action) Centre at the Polytechnic and developed the IDEA Module for all first year students at the Singapore Polytechnic to infuse innovation and design into their curriculum.

Mr Ho was instrumental in the infusion of design thinking at Singapore Polytechnic. As Director of the School of Design, he developed and launched the Diploma in Experience and Product Design, the first of its kind to train a new breed of experience designers for the new creative economy. Since the inception of the School of Design in 2007, the students and graduates of the school have been well-received by the industry and have won many prizes for design locally and internationally. He was creator of the successful "50 plus designing for 50 plus" workshop that uses design thinking, where designers collaborated with seniors to design products and services for the ageing 50 plus market.

Prior to his directorship at the Singapore Polytechnic, Mr Ho practiced as an architect at the Housing Development Board (HDB) and in private practice. As a Strategic Design Specialist, he has helped organisations and businesses work towards the strategic use of design to achieve a competitive edge. Mr Ho is also a visual artist; his acrylic paintings are well-received and in private collections.

About Dr Tan

Dr Milton Tan was MICA Fellow and the founding Executive Director of the DesignSingapore Council, the national agency for promotion and development of Singapore design under the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) since August 2003. Before the Council was set up, Dr Milton Tan played a crucial role in chairing the multi-agency Design Singapore Taskforce which contributed key recommendations to the Economic Review Committee (ERC). These recommendations included those specific to the Singapore's Creative Industries, and design in particular. Following the government's acceptance of the ERC recommendations, Dr Tan was appointed by MICA to start up the DesignSingapore Council.

As the Director of the DesignSingapore Council, Dr Tan spearheaded several initiatives that have brought significant change to Singapore's creative and design industry. He established programmes and initiatives to promote and develop the design sector, including the President's Design Award Singapore, 10TouchPoints, ManyWaysOfSeeing and the Singapore Design Festival. Dr Tan also initiated the establishment of the DesignSingapore Scholarship, the Overseas Partnership Promotion Programme, "Design Futures" Research and Development grant, Design for Enterprises Programme and the DesignSingapore Studios Programme.

Dr Tan has also been instrumental in developing international design relationships which resulted in the signing of four international Memorandums of Understanding with the Korea Institute for Design Promotion, the Victoria State of Australia, the Vitra Design Museum and the government of Denmark.

In his tenure, Dr Tan also commissioned Singapore's first presentation at the Venice Biennale International Architectural Exhibition in 2004, as well as subsequent pavilions in 2006 and 2008. Most recently, he commissioned the DesignSingapore Design2050 Studios on design propositions for aspects of life in 2050 that made their debut at the Icsid World Design Congress in November 2009.

During Dr Tan's stewardship, Singapore's international design standing reached a record high. Designium's Global Design Watch 2006 singled Singapore out as one of "the real winners" who made the best progress. In 2009, the inaugural International Design Scoreboard supported by the UK Design Council and conducted by University of Cambridge, ranked Singapore at the top position based on design capability (in relative measures).

A Design Strategist, Dr Tan has also been a jury member for local and international design awards and competitions. This includes the Punggol Waterfront Housing Design Competition (2009) organised by the Housing Development Board (HDB), Denmark's INDEX:Award 'Design to Improve Life' (2009), France's Observeur du Design Award (2008), iF Design Award China (2008) and the Industrial Design Society of America International Design Award (2007).

About DesignSingapore Council
Design changes and improves lives, inspires creativity and new forms of expression. It also enhances business competitiveness in today's crowded marketplace.

A Promotional Member of Icsid, DesignSingapore is Singapore's response to these propositions and opportunities. As a national initiative, DesignSingapore aims to place Singapore on the world map for design creativity. It looks to developing a thriving, multi-disciplinary design cluster of industries and activities in Singapore that has relevance and impact globally. The initiative also aims to bring design to business boardrooms, new audiences and new markets.

The DesignSingapore Council was formed in August 2003 as a department within the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, as the public organisation for promotion and development of Singapore design.

The Council is dedicated to enhancing Singapore's design capabilities and growing the appeal of design in everyday life. This is achieved through design scholarships to nurture Singapore designers, as well as research and development focused on design excellence. The Council has also played a pivotal role in the establishment of design studios to grow the design industry. Up and coming Singapore designers have also raised their international profile with support from DesignSingapore's Overseas Promotion Partnership Programme.
